ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of smart classroom technology on students' learning outcomes, with particular reference to Owo Smart Green School, Enugu. Despite the growing adoption of smart classroom technology in modern education, concerns remain about whether the availability and use of digital instructional facilities actually translate into improved learning outcomes among students. The study was guided by three specific objectives, three research questions, and three null hypotheses. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all teachers and students of Owo Smart Green School, Enugu, totaling 1,920 respondents, made up of 120 teachers and 1,800 students. The sample size of 331 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane formula at a 0.05 level of significance. The stratified random sampling technique was used to allocate the sample proportionally between teachers and students, while the simple random sampling technique was used to select the individual respondents. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled Smart Classroom Technology and Students' Learning Outcomes Questionnaire (SCTSLQ), which was validated by three experts and tested for reliability using the Cronbach alpha method, yielding an overall reliability coefficient of 0.82. Out of the 331 copies of the questionnaire administered, 325 copies were properly completed and returned, representing a return rate of 98.2 percent. The data collected were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and simple linear regression analysis at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that smart classroom technology is available and utilized for teaching and learning at Owo Smart Green School, Enugu. The findings also revealed that smart classroom technology has a positive effect on students' academic performance and learning outcomes at Owo Smart Green School, Enugu. The study further found a significant positive relationship between the availability and utilization of smart classroom technology and students' learning outcomes (r = 0.68, p = 0.000), and a significant negative relationship between the challenges affecting the use of smart classroom technology and students' learning outcomes (r = -0.54, p = 0.000). Simple linear regression analysis showed that smart classroom technology has a significant effect on students' academic performance (R = 0.72, R² = 0.518, F = 346.82, p = 0.000), with approximately 51.8 percent of the variance in students' academic performance explained by smart classroom technology. The study identified several challenges affecting the effective use of smart classroom technology, including inadequate technological infrastructure, unreliable internet connectivity, limited access to digital learning resources, insufficient teacher training, ineffective integration of technology into classroom instruction, poor electricity supply, inadequate technical support, and financial constraints. The study also identified several strategies for improving the use of smart classroom technology, including regular training of teachers, improving internet connectivity, providing adequate technical support, increasing access to digital learning resources, ensuring reliable electricity supply, integrating technology with appropriate teaching methods, regular maintenance of smart classroom facilities, and adequate funding. Based on the findings, the study concluded that smart classroom technology has a significant positive effect on students' learning outcomes at Owo Smart Green School, Enugu. The study recommended, among others, that the management of Owo Smart Green School, Enugu, should ensure that smart classroom technology is adequately available and utilized for teaching and learning, invest in regular training and professional development programmes for teachers on the effective use of smart classroom technology, and address the challenges affecting the effective use of smart classroom technology to maximize its benefits and improve students' learning outcomes.
