10            cultural   transmission   (Baran,   2015).

Over the years, films have been well received by viewers. Films, commonly known as motion pictures, consist of a series of moving images. These images are created either by taking photos with a camera or by using animation techniques and visual effects. Similar to literature, films represent a special cultural medium and play an important role in the process of cultural transmission (Baran, 2019). In the 21st century, access to films from different countries has become remarkably convenient.

On-demand streaming services provide online platforms that allow audiences to watch any show or movie at their convenience (Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). There is currently a growing interest in foreign films, which often exceeds the appeal of domestic productions. This evolving landscape is having a profound impact on the younger generation, influencing them morally, culturally, behaviorally and psychologically. It is argued that technology, including television, contributes to a decline in patience and an increase in lethargy. Nowadays, devices such as mobile phones, computers and televisions are available for watching movies. Audiences are often influenced by the content they consume in films, leading them to strive to recreate the lives of their favorite actors and actresses, believing that they too can experience similar joy, challenges and determination.

Youth represent a significant demographic in the film industry and often serve as the primary target audience. Many of them are largely unaware of the content they consume across various media platforms, including television. Their tendency to watch movies can negatively impact their academic performance. More and more young students are prioritizing technology devices and streaming content over their studies, household responsibilities and parental support. Such patterns of defiance can profoundly influence their developmental stages and general behavioral tendencies (Brown and Bassey-Duke, 2014).

The influence of foreign films on young people's behavior has sparked growing interest among researchers and media experts. As globalization continues to break down cultural barriers, the impact of international cinema on young audiences has become an important area of research. Foreign films, often depicting different lifestyles, values and social norms, have the ability to influence young people's perceptions and actions in many ways. This trend raises important questions about cultural assimilation, identity development, and the potential for cross-cultural interactions in a time characterized by unprecedented digital access to a variety of media content.

Research highlights that foreign films can significantly affect youths' worldviews and behavioral patterns by exposing them to alternative perspectives and cultural practices. For instance, a study by Smith and Johnson (2020) found that American teenagers who regularly watched European cinema exhibited more openness to diverse cultures and ideas, suggesting a correlation between foreign film exposure and increased cultural tolerance (Smith & Johnson, 2020).

Similarly, Lee and Chen (2021) observed that Korean dramas significantly influenced the fashion and social behaviors of young viewers across Asia, demonstrating how foreign media can impact lifestyle choices (Lee & Chen, 2021). Such studies underscore the transformative power of foreign films in shaping youth behavior and cultural attitudes.

On the flip side, the portrayal of stereotypes and unrealistic lifestyles in foreign films can also affect youth behavior in negative ways. According to a report by Ramirez (2019), some foreign films perpetuate exaggerated stereotypes, which can lead to skewed perceptions of different cultures among young viewers (Ramirez, 2019). Additionally, the idealized depictions of wealth and success in certain foreign films can foster unrealistic aspirations and dissatisfaction among youths, as noted by Patel (2022) in his analysis of Indian cinema's impact on adolescent attitudes (Patel, 2022). These contrasting effects highlight the dual-edged nature of foreign film influence, where positive cultural exchange can be counterbalanced by potential negative outcomes.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

The impact of foreign films on the behavioral patterns of youth presents a multifaceted problem that warrants detailed examination. Foreign films, with their diverse cultural narratives and depictions of lifestyles, can influence young audiences in both positive and negative ways. On one hand, exposure to different cultures through cinema can foster greater cultural understanding and tolerance among youth (Smith & Johnson, 2020). For example, European films that portray varying social norms and traditions can broaden adolescents' perspectives and challenge preconceived notions about other cultures. On the other hand, there is concern that foreign films can also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and unrealistic standards, potentially leading to distorted views and behavioral expectations (Ramirez, 2019). Such portrayals may affect youths' self-image and aspirations, especially if they identify with or aspire to emulate the idealized characters and lifestyles depicted in these films.

The dual nature of this influence underscores the need to scrutinize how foreign films shape the attitudes and behaviors of young audiences. As globalization accelerates and digital media provides unprecedented access to international content, understanding these impacts becomes increasingly crucial. While foreign films have the potential to promote empathy and cultural exchange, their capacity to reinforce negative stereotypes and unrealistic aspirations necessitates a balanced investigation into their effects on youth. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive analysis of both the beneficial and detrimental aspects of foreign film content on young viewers (Lee & Chen, 2021).Top of Form

1.10 Definition of Terms

Foreign Film

A foreign film refers to any motion picture produced outside the viewer’s native country, often featuring cultural, social, and linguistic elements distinct from those of the viewer's own culture. These films can include various genres, such as drama, comedy, or documentary, and are typically shown in their original language with subtitles or dubbed into the viewer’s language.

2. Behavioral Pattern

Behavioral pattern encompasses the recurring ways in which individuals act or respond in various situations. In the context of youths, this term refers to their typical responses, actions, and social interactions, which can be influenced by internal factors (e.g., personal beliefs and emotions) and external factors (e.g., media exposure).

3. Cultural Assimilation

Cultural assimilation is the process through which individuals or groups adopt the cultural norms, values, and practices of another culture. In the context of foreign films, it refers to how exposure to different cultural portrayals in films might lead youths to integrate aspects of those cultures into their own lifestyles and behaviors.

4. Stereotyping

Stereotyping involves generalized and often oversimplified beliefs about a group of people based on their cultural, ethnic, or social characteristics. In foreign films, stereotypes may manifest as exaggerated or misleading representations of certain groups, potentially influencing how youths perceive and interact with individuals from those cultures.

5. Social Learning

Social learning is a theory that suggests individuals acquire new behaviors, attitudes, and values by observing others, particularly role models, and imitating their actions. Foreign films can serve as a medium for social learning by presenting characters and scenarios that youths may emulate in their own lives.

6. Cultural Perception

Cultural perception refers to the way individuals understand and interpret cultural norms and practices based on their own cultural background and experiences. Foreign films can shape cultural perceptions by presenting diverse cultural practices and social norms, which can influence how youths view and relate to other cultures.

7. Media Influence

Media influence is the effect that media content has on individuals' thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. In the context of foreign films, media influence refers to how exposure to international cinema can affect youths' views, behaviors, and social norms, either by reinforcing existing attitudes or introducing new ones.
