CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background to the Study

Recent years have seen a significant change in the traditional workplace, with remote work playing a significant role in determining the nature of work in the future. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many organisations had to make considerable adjustments, reconsidering key elements of their technology use and business processes in order to continue operating while acclimating to a new set of norms and practices (Dwivedi et al., 2020).

Despite the removal of the restrictions, many businesses and workers have decided to make remote work a permanent option. This is because they are aware of its many advantages. The rise of remote work is changing workplace culture in general as well as how employees carry out their jobs. It is impacting everything from job happiness and productivity to how companies run and recruit talent. The increased freedom that remote work offers employees is among its most noteworthy benefits (Yeganeh, 2021). People are now able to better balance their personal and professional life because to the ability to work from home or any other location. Without having to travel far, workers can engage in hobbies, spend more time with their families, or simply have a better work-life balance, which eventually results in higher job satisfaction and, often, higher productivity (Wiśniewski and Wiśniewska, 2017).

According to research, remote workers often report feeling more productive and concentrated, mostly because they may customise their workspaces to their liking and are less distracted by office distractions (Kowalski & Ślebarska, 2022; Mamatha & Thoti, 2023; Prasad et al., 2024).

Remote work has several advantages for businesses as well. Businesses can reduce overhead costs like rent, utilities, and office supplies associated with maintaining physical office buildings by implementing remote work rules. Additionally, working remotely broadens the pool of talent worldwide, allowing businesses to hire exceptional applicants without regard to location (Oshioste et al., 2023). Ideas that promote creativity and improve diversity in the work environment can be gained. Also, as many of the employees enjoy the liberty and independence that working at home offers them, the inclusion of remote working facilities can enhance employee retention (Chatterjee et al. 2021).

The increasing number of people working from home has required significant changes in business culture and communication, thus prompting businesses to use new technology and solutions to promote cooperation and teamwork because of employees’ scattered locations (Mahesh, 2024). This shift has led to a significant change in how businesses operate, especially in Nigeria, where teamwork and telecommuting are more common. Both technological advancements and the need for flexible, efficient work solutions are driving this change. Nigerian companies are not just copying global trends; they are tackling specific local problems and seizing unique opportunities in the region.

The expansion of mobile connectivity and high-speed internet access is a key driver of this technological change in Nigeria.According to a National Communications Commission (NCC) study released in March 2024, a major advancement in internet infrastructure is necessary to facilitate remote work and online collaboration (NCC, 2024). This development has made it possible for more Nigerian businesses to use advanced office technologies that are necessary for remote operations, such as cloud-based platforms and virtual collaboration tools.

Implementation of cloud computing technologies has had a substantial impact on numerous Nigerian organisations. A study released in June 2024 by the International Data Corporation (IDC) claims that cloud services are currently widely utilized by Nigerian companies for data storage, project management, and communication (IDC, 2024). This change not only improves operational efficiency but also gives remote workers the flexibility they need to be productive. Geographical restrictions are removed when cloud technology is used, allowing staff members to collaborate and access data from nearly any location. There are now significantly more communication platforms and collaborative tools made especially for remote teams.

According to research performed in April 2024 by the Nigerian IT Association (NITDA), tools such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Zoom have become very popular among Nigerian organizations because they make communication and teamwork simple (NITDA, 2024). In order to maintain productivity and ensure effective communication, these platforms are crucial, even when team members are geographically separated.

A significant player in the Nigerian labor market, Jobberman highlights the necessity of innovative solutions to preserve operational quality, foster collaboration, and ensure continuity in a largely virtual environment. This study aims to investigate the application of new office technologies that facilitate remote work and improve collaboration in Nigerian companies, specifically focusing on Jobberman.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

The growing adoption of remote work globally has underscored the need for effective office technologies that enable seamless collaboration and efficient communication among dispersed teams. Collaboration problems in remote working cause productivity gaps and inconsistencies. The lack of proper schedules disrupts routines, disables workflow, and creates bad habits that lead to a failure to accomplish goals and objectives set. Productivity gaps can destroy hours of progress without proper systems for time and project management (Ilag, 2021).

In order to reduce the occurrence of such problems, the company must have an action plan on how to work in a remote work situation (Cakula and Pratt, 2021). Top of Form

Jobberman one of the largest recruitment platform in Nigeria, linking employers to talent across the country, has been at the forefront of embracing remote work. However, there is limited insight into whether the company has successfully implemented the necessary office technologies to address the unique challenges of remote work in Nigeria. By examining Jobberman’s current technology infrastructure, this study seeks to determine whether the company has integrated the right tools and solutions to support a productive remote work environment. Furthermore, the research will assess the effectiveness of these technologies in improving the overall efficiency of Jobberman’s remote workforce.
