CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In the fast-paced world of the hospitality industry, where customer satisfaction is paramount and demands are ever-evolving, maintaining mental serenity is crucial for both employees and employers alike. This introductory article delves into the significance of promoting mental well-being in the hospitality workplace, exploring strategies and initiatives that foster a harmonious and resilient workforce.

Mental well-being in the hospitality sector is not merely a luxury but a necessity. Research by Wang and Tang (2019) highlights the prevalence of stress and burnout among hospitality professionals, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues proactively. By prioritizing mental health initiatives, organizations can enhance employee satisfaction and retention while also improving overall productivity and service quality (Pecoraro et al., 2020).

Effective leadership plays a pivotal role in creating a conducive environment for mental serenity. As noted by Hayes et al. (2021), supportive and empathetic leadership styles have been linked to reduced stress levels and increased job satisfaction among hospitality workers. Moreover, implementing mindfulness and resilience training programs can empower employees to navigate challenges with equanimity, as evidenced by studies conducted by Liao et al. (2022).

Furthermore, fostering a culture of open communication and destigmatizing mental health discussions are integral aspects of promoting well-being in the hospitality workplace (Kim & Shin, 2023). Encouraging employees to seek support when needed and providing access to resources such as counseling services can facilitate early intervention and prevent the escalation of mental health issues.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In the dynamic and demanding environment of the hospitality industry, promoting mental serenity among employees emerges as a critical yet challenging endeavor. This 1.2 1.2 Statement of the Problem aims to elucidate the multifaceted nature of this issue, highlighting the factors contributing to stress and burnout in hospitality settings and underscoring the significance of addressing these concerns promptly. Kim and Shin (2023).

A primary concern in the hospitality workplace is the high prevalence of stress and burnout among employees, which significantly impacts job satisfaction and performance. Research by Wang and Tang (2019) indicates that long working hours, demanding customer interactions, and high job demands contribute to heightened stress levels among hospitality professionals. Moreover, the transient nature of the industry and the pressure to meet stringent service standards further exacerbate these challenges, leading to potential repercussions on employee well-being and organizational outcomes.

These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.

Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is delimited to Monte Suites Hotel Lekki.  Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.

Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.

Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.

Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.

Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
