INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Alternative medicine, encompassing a diverse range of therapeutic practices distinct from conventional Western medicine, has gained considerable traction globally, including in Nigeria. This sector of healthcare integrates traditional practices with modern alternative approaches such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, and homeopathy. Despite its growing popularity, alternative medicine in Nigeria faces significant challenges and prospects. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in understanding how these practices can complement conventional treatments and improve overall healthcare outcomes (Afolabi et al., 2023). However, the integration of alternative medicine into the mainstream healthcare system is fraught with hurdles including regulatory issues, efficacy concerns, and cultural attitudes (Okeke et al., 2022).
One major challenge is the lack of formal regulation and standardization in alternative medicine practices. Unlike conventional medicine, which is governed by stringent protocols and scientific validation, many alternative therapies operate with minimal oversight. This absence of regulation raises concerns about safety and efficacy, as practitioners are not always required to meet established professional standards (Umar et al., 2024). Additionally, the quality and consistency of herbal remedies can vary widely, leading to potential health risks for patients (Adebowale & Omololu, 2021).
Cultural factors also play a significant role in shaping the landscape of alternative medicine in Nigeria. Traditional healing practices are deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of many Nigerian communities, with local herbalists and traditional healers often serving as primary healthcare providers. This cultural acceptance can be a double-edged sword; while it facilitates access to alternative treatments, it also complicates efforts to standardize practices and integrate them with modern medical approaches (Alabi & Adepoju, 2022). Moreover, there is often a lack of collaboration between traditional practitioners and conventional healthcare providers, which can hinder holistic patient care.
Despite these challenges, there are promising prospects for alternative medicine in Nigeria. Increasing public awareness and demand for holistic and personalized healthcare options create opportunities for better integration of alternative therapies into the national health system. Research into the efficacy of traditional remedies and the establishment of regulatory frameworks could enhance the credibility and safety of alternative medicine (Ogunbiyi et al., 2023). Furthermore, fostering partnerships between traditional healers and modern healthcare professionals could lead to more comprehensive and culturally sensitive healthcare delivery (Nwankwo & Chukwuma, 2021).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Alternative medicine in Nigeria, while increasingly popular, faces a range of significant challenges that hinder its effective integration into the national healthcare system. One primary issue is the lack of formal regulation and standardization, which poses risks related to the safety and efficacy of alternative therapies. Many alternative practices, including herbal remedies and traditional healing methods, operate with minimal oversight, leading to variability in quality and potential health risks for patients (Adebowale & Omololu, 2021). This regulatory gap not only undermines public trust but also complicates efforts to integrate these practices with conventional medicine in a coherent and safe manner.
Additionally, cultural factors play a crucial role in both supporting and complicating the landscape of alternative medicine in Nigeria. Traditional healing practices are deeply entrenched in the cultural fabric of many communities, often making them the first line of treatment for numerous individuals. However, this cultural prominence also presents challenges for the standardization and scientific validation of these practices. The lack of dialogue and collaboration between traditional healers and modern medical professionals further exacerbates this issue, leading to fragmented care and missed opportunities for more integrated treatment approaches (Alabi & Adepoju, 2022).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine Alternative medicine in Nigeria: challenges and prospects. Specific objectives of the study are:
- To Assess the Current State and Prevalence of Alternative Medicine in Nigeria.
- To Identify the Challenges Faced by Alternative Medicine Practitioners and Users in Nigeria.
- To Explore the Potential of Alternative Medicine to Address Healthcare Needs in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:
- What are the most popular forms of alternative medicine practiced in Nigeria, and what is their prevalence among different demographic groups?
- What are the primary regulatory challenges faced by alternative medicine practitioners in Nigeria, and how do these challenges impact their ability to provide quality care?
- How can alternative medicine be integrated into the existing healthcare system in Nigeria to improve access to care and reduce healthcare costs?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the challenges faced by alternative medicine in Nigeria and its prospects for integration into the mainstream healthcare system.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:
Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Public health sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.
Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.
Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is delimited to Warri Metropolis. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.
1.9 Organization of the Study
The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.
Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.
Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.
Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.
Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
