Research questionnaire on "THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON MENTAL HEALTH IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF LAGOS STATE). 49
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent years, the ubiquitous presence of social media has revolutionized communication and connectivity, transcending geographical boundaries and reshaping the way individuals interact globally. While social media platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for information dissemination, community building, and self-expression, concerns have emerged regarding their potential impact on mental health. This issue is particularly salient in the context of Nigeria, where social media usage has surged in tandem with technological advancements. This introduction explores the multifaceted relationship between social media and mental health in Nigeria, shedding light on the potential challenges and benefits that arise from this dynamic interaction Colditz, J. B., & Miller, E. (2017).
The rapid proliferation of social media in Nigeria has transformed the cultural and social landscape, influencing the way people communicate, share information, and construct their identities. However, the pervasive nature of social media engagement raises questions about its effects on mental well-being. Numerous studies globally have identified associations between extensive social media use and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. This introduction aims to contextualize these findings within the Nigerian socio-cultural framework, considering how local factors may contribute to or mitigate the impact of social media on mental health. Campbell, W. K., & Campbell, S. M. (2018)
Understanding the nuances of this relationship is crucial, as it can inform the development of strategies and interventions to promote mental well-being in Nigeria. Cultural norms, societal expectations, and the influence of traditional values may shape the manifestation of mental health challenges related to social media use in unique ways. By examining the available literature on this topic, we seek to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of social media on mental health in Nigeria. This inquiry is essential for fostering a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by social media, paving the way for informed discussions and evidence-based interventions tailored to the Nigerian context. Ajuwon, P. M. (2017).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The study on "The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health in Nigeria" aims to address the growing concern surrounding the influence of social media platforms on the psychological well-being of individuals in the Nigerian context. As social media usage becomes increasingly prevalent in the country, there is a need to understand the specific ways in which it affects mental health. The 1.2 Statement of the Problem highlights the lack of comprehensive research on this subject within the Nigerian context, raising questions about the potential correlation between social media engagement and mental health outcomes. Factors such as cyberbullying, social comparison, and the dissemination of unrealistic beauty standards through social media platforms may contribute to adverse mental health effects. This study seeks to explore these dynamics, providing valuable insights into the nuanced relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes in Nigeria, ultimately contributing to the development of informed interventions and policies to address any identified issues.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of social media on mental health in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the study are:
- 1. Understand the relationship between specific social media platforms and different aspects of mental health in Nigerian youth.
- 2. Explore the cultural and demographic factors that influence the interaction between social media use and mental health in Nigeria.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing and potential interventions for promoting mental well-being and responsible social media use among Nigerian youth.
1.4 Research Questions
To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:
- To what extent is the use of different social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem among Nigerian youth aged 18-25?
- How do factors like gender, socioeconomic status, and urban/rural location moderate the relationship between social media use and mental health among Nigerian youth?
- How effective are existing mental health awareness campaigns and digital literacy programs in mitigating the negative impact of social media on Nigerian youth?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:
Ho: There is no statistical significant relationship between social media and mental health.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:
Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Psychology sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.
Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.
Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is delimited to Lagos state. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.
1.9 Organization of the Study
The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.
Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.
Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.
Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.
Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
