CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in alternative and complementary therapies within the healthcare sector globally. Nigeria, like many other countries, has witnessed an increasing integration of these therapies into patient care practices. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a pivotal role in patient care and are often at the forefront of implementing these therapies. This introduction seeks to delve into the landscape of alternative and complementary therapies employed by Nigerian nurses in patient care settings, exploring the motivations behind their utilization, challenges encountered, and potential benefits for patient outcomes.

The utilization of alternative and complementary therapies by Nigerian nurses reflects a broader shift towards holistic approaches to healthcare. These therapies encompass a diverse range of practices, including traditional medicine, herbal remedies, acupuncture, and aromatherapy, among others. The incorporation of these modalities into nursing practice aligns with the cultural beliefs and preferences of many patients in Nigeria, who often seek holistic healing alongside conventional medical treatments (Ezeome et al., 2017). However, while the integration of alternative therapies may enhance patient-centered care, it also poses challenges related to standardized training, regulation, and evidence-based practice among nurses (Oyebola et al., 2019).

Furthermore, the exploration of alternative and complementary therapies in Nigerian nursing practice underscores the need for comprehensive research and education in this emerging field. Despite the widespread use of these therapies, there remains a dearth of empirical evidence regarding their efficacy and safety in the Nigerian context (Okafor et al., 2020). Additionally, nurses encounter barriers such as limited access to training programs and skepticism from healthcare colleagues, which may impede their ability to effectively incorporate these therapies into patient care (Adebayo et al., 2018). Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts between healthcare institutions, regulatory bodies, and educational institutions to promote evidence-based practice and ensure the safe and effective use of alternative and complementary therapies by Nigerian nurses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, the healthcare landscape is witnessing a surge in the integration of alternative and complementary therapies (ACTs) alongside conventional medical practices. However, there is a dearth of research exploring the involvement of Nigerian nurses in the utilization of these therapies within patient care contexts. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which Nigerian nurses are incorporating ACTs into their practice, as well as their knowledge, attitudes, and perceived effectiveness of these therapies. By shedding light on the role of nurses in the utilization of ACTs, this research aims to contribute to the development of culturally sensitive and holistic healthcare practices in Nigeria, thereby improving patient outcomes and satisfaction (Adedoyin & Soyemi, 2019; Ezeome & Anarado, 2016).

Understanding the factors influencing Nigerian nurses' engagement with ACTs is crucial for enhancing healthcare delivery in the country. While conventional medicine remains the cornerstone of healthcare in Nigeria, the prevalence of ACT usage among patients suggests a growing demand for complementary approaches. Yet, the extent to which nurses are equipped to navigate this evolving landscape and integrate ACTs into patient care remains unclear. By exploring the perspectives and experiences of Nigerian nurses regarding ACTs, this study aims to identify barriers and facilitators to their adoption, thus informing strategies to promote the safe and effective integration of these therapies into clinical practice (Adedoyin & Soyemi, 2019; Ezeome & Anarado, 2016).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine Exploring the Use of Alternative and Complementary Therapies by Nigerian Nurses in Patient Care. Specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To assess the prevalence and types of ACT used by Nigerian nurses.
  2. To understand the factors influencing Nigerian nurses' use of ACT.
  3. To explore the perceived benefits and challenges associated with ACT use in Nigerian healthcare settings.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:

  1. What percentage of Nigerian nurses integrate ACT modalities into their patient care routines?
  2. What are the primary motivations for Nigerian nurses to incorporate ACT into their care practices?
  3. How do Nigerian nurses perceive the impact of ACT on patient outcomes?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:

Ho: There is no significant difference in the utilization of alternative and complementary therapies by Nigerian nurses in patient care compared to conventional therapies.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:

Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Nursing Science sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.

Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.

Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is delimited to Delta State University Teaching Hospital. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.

Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.

Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.

Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.

Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
