CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, influencing various aspects of daily activities, including communication, entertainment, and personal relationships. The pervasive use of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter has significantly altered how individuals interact and maintain relationships. In the context of marital relationships, social media offers both opportunities and challenges. Research indicates that these platforms can enhance communication between spouses, enabling them to share experiences and maintain a sense of connection even when physically apart (Hertlein & Webster, 2013). However, the same tools that facilitate connection can also introduce complexities, such as the potential for jealousy, misunderstandings, and conflicts (Kuss & Griffiths, 2011).

The impact of social media on marital satisfaction is multifaceted. On one hand, couples can use social media to express affection and support, which can strengthen their bond (Muise, Christofides, & Desmarais, 2009). On the other hand, excessive use of social media has been linked to decreased relationship satisfaction and increased instances of conflict (Valenzuela, Halpern, & Katz, 2014). The visibility of interactions with third parties, such as friends and acquaintances, can sometimes lead to feelings of jealousy or insecurity among spouses (Abbasi, 2019). These mixed outcomes highlight the importance of understanding the dynamics of social media use within the context of marital relationships.

Furthermore, the role of social media in facilitating extramarital affairs cannot be overlooked. The accessibility and anonymity offered by these platforms can make it easier for individuals to engage in infidelity (Clayton, Nagurney, & Smith, 2013). Studies have shown that social media can serve as a conduit for rekindling past relationships or initiating new ones, which can pose a significant threat to marital stability (Cravens, Leckie, & Whiting, 2013). The ease with which individuals can form intimate connections online underscores the need for couples to establish clear boundaries and communication regarding social media use to safeguard their relationship (Hertlein & Ancheta, 2014).

In conclusion, social media's influence on marital relationships is a double-edged sword, offering both benefits and challenges. While it provides a platform for enhanced communication and support, it also introduces risks related to jealousy, conflict, and infidelity. As social media continues to evolve, understanding its impact on marital dynamics remains crucial for fostering healthy and resilient relationships. Future research should focus on developing strategies to mitigate the negative effects of social media while maximizing its potential to strengthen marital bonds.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, the pervasive use of social media has introduced new dimensions to marital relationships, presenting both benefits and challenges. While social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram facilitate communication and provide opportunities for couples to stay connected, they also introduce risks that can strain marital bonds. For instance, the visibility of interactions with third parties can lead to misunderstandings, jealousy, and insecurity among spouses (Abbasi, 2019). Additionally, the potential for social media to serve as a platform for infidelity and inappropriate relationships poses a significant threat to marital stability (Clayton, Nagurney, & Smith, 2013). These issues underscore the need for a nuanced understanding of how social media influences marital dynamics in Ikot Ekpene, where cultural values and technological advancements intersect uniquely.

The challenges posed by social media in marital relationships are not limited to emotional insecurity and infidelity. Excessive use of these platforms can lead to decreased face-to-face interactions and reduced quality time between spouses, further exacerbating relational issues (Valenzuela, Halpern, & Katz, 2014). In Ikot Ekpene, where traditional family values emphasize direct communication and mutual support, the intrusion of social media can disrupt established norms and expectations. Furthermore, the stress associated with managing online relationships alongside offline responsibilities can contribute to marital dissatisfaction and conflict. Addressing these problems requires comprehensive research and targeted interventions to help couples navigate the complexities of social media use while maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships. Understanding the specific context of Ikot Ekpene is essential to developing culturally relevant strategies that can mitigate the adverse effects of social media on marriages in this locality.
