CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent years, the role of libraries in Nigerian schools has become increasingly pivotal in advancing information literacy among students. Information literacy encompasses the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use information from various sources, a skill crucial in today's information age. Libraries serve as vital hubs where students can cultivate these skills through access to diverse resources such as books, journals, and digital archives. This introduction explores the assessment of libraries in Nigerian schools in promoting information literacy, emphasizing their impact on students' academic achievement and lifelong learning. Adeyemi, B. A. (2020).
The significance of information literacy in Nigerian schools cannot be overstated, especially considering the dynamic nature of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Libraries play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide by providing access to both physical and digital resources that enable students to navigate and critically analyze information. As educational institutions increasingly adopt ICTs for teaching and learning, libraries serve as essential spaces where students can develop competencies in digital literacy alongside traditional literacy skills. Oyewusi, F. O., & Oyewusi, L. M. (2019).
Several studies underscore the transformative potential of libraries in enhancing information literacy among Nigerian students. For instance, research by Oyewusi and Oyewusi (2019) highlights how school libraries contribute to students' academic performance by providing structured learning environments that encourage information-seeking behavior. Furthermore, according to Adeyemi (2020), effective library programs not only support curriculum objectives but also foster lifelong learning habits that prepare students for future educational and professional endeavors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The role of libraries in promoting information literacy within Nigerian schools faces multifaceted challenges that impede their effectiveness in preparing students for the demands of the digital age. One critical issue is the disparity in access to adequate library resources across different regions and educational institutions. While some schools benefit from well-equipped libraries with up-to-date books and digital resources, many others grapple with insufficient funding and outdated materials (Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria, 2023). This disparity not only limits students' exposure to diverse information sources but also hinders their ability to develop crucial information literacy skills necessary for academic success and lifelong learning.
Furthermore, the integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Nigerian school libraries remains uneven and often inadequate. While ICTs offer immense potential to enhance information literacy by providing access to vast digital repositories and online learning tools, their adoption in many Nigerian school libraries lags due to infrastructural limitations and resource constraints (UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, 2022). This digital divide exacerbates inequities in information access and literacy development among students, particularly those in underserved communities where access to reliable internet and digital devices is limited.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine Assessment of the Role of Libraries in Promoting Information Literacy in Nigerian Schools. Specific objectives of the study are:
- To evaluate the information resources available in Nigerian school libraries
- To assess the information literacy skills of Nigerian schoolchildren
- To explore the library instruction programs offered in Nigerian schools
1.4 Research Questions
To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:
- To what extent do Nigerian school libraries provide access to a diverse range of information resources that cater to the information literacy needs of students?
- What is the level of information literacy skills among Nigerian schoolchildren, particularly in areas like information seeking evaluation, and ethical use?
- How effective are the current library instruction programs in Nigerian schools in equipping students with the necessary information literacy skills, and what are the key strengths and weaknesses of these programs?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the role of libraries and the promotion of information literacy in Nigerian schools.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:
Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Library Science sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.
Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.
Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is delimited to Ibom E-library. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.
1.9 Organization of the Study
The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.
Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.
Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.
Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.
Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
