CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Early childhood education (ECE) plays a pivotal role in shaping the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children, laying the foundation for future academic success. In the context of Nigeria, where education has been identified as a key driver of national development, understanding the impact of early childhood education on student achievement is of paramount importance. This introduction aims to explore the multifaceted influence of ECE on academic outcomes in Nigeria, considering the socio-economic challenges and the unique educational landscape of the country. Adeyemo (2018).
The significance of early childhood education in Nigeria is underscored by the fact that the early years are critical for brain development, and interventions during this period can have lasting effects on a child's academic trajectory. Despite the acknowledged importance of ECE, there are disparities in access and quality across different regions of Nigeria. This introduction will delve into the existing literature to analyze the various factors that contribute to the impact of early childhood education on student achievement, taking into account the cultural, economic, and policy-related aspects that shape the ECE landscape in Nigeria. Okoroji and Eze (2020).
To understand the impact comprehensively, this introduction will draw upon a range of scholarly works and empirical studies. Notable references include the works of Adeyemo (2018), who explores the role of socio-economic factors in shaping early childhood education outcomes in Nigeria, and Okoroji and Eze (2020), who examine the influence of teacher quality on student achievement in early childhood settings. Additionally, the research by Ogunyemi and Akomolafe (2019) provides insights into the effectiveness of different ECE models in Nigerian contexts, contributing to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between early childhood education and student achievement.Top of Form

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The landscape of early childhood education (ECE) in Nigeria presents a complex array of challenges that directly influence student achievement in later years. One critical problem is the unequal distribution of quality ECE resources and opportunities, which exacerbates educational disparities among children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. A considerable number of Nigerian children, particularly those in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, face limited access to high-quality early childhood education programs. The lack of equitable access not only hampers cognitive and socio-emotional development but also sets the stage for persistent achievement gaps throughout their educational journey. Understanding the nuances of this unequal distribution of ECE resources is vital for crafting effective policies and interventions that can bridge the gap and promote more equitable opportunities for all Nigerian children. Adeyemo (2018).
Another pressing issue is the quality of early childhood education programs in Nigeria. While access is a critical concern, the effectiveness of existing ECE initiatives also varies significantly. Factors such as teacher qualifications, curriculum design, and infrastructure play pivotal roles in determining the quality of early childhood education. Insufficient training and support for ECE educators, coupled with a lack of standardized curriculum and assessment practices, contribute to inconsistencies in the educational experiences of young learners. This disparity in the quality of ECE programs poses a substantial challenge, as it directly impacts the preparedness of children for formal schooling, potentially influencing their academic achievement in subsequent years. Addressing these quality-related issues is essential for maximizing the positive impact of early childhood education on student achievement in Nigeria. Okoroji and Eze (2020).Top of Form

1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of early childhood education on student achievement in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the study are:
- 1. To assess the cognitive development impact of early childhood education (ECE) on student achievement in Nigeria.
- 2. To analyze the influence of ECE on non-cognitive skills and their impact on student achievement in Nigeria.
- To evaluate the long-term benefits of ECE participation on educational attainment and socioeconomic outcomes in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:
- To what extent do students who attend ECE programs in Nigeria demonstrate higher scores on standardized tests in primary school compared to those who do not attend ECE?
- How does ECE participation affect non-cognitive skills such as self-regulation, social-emotional development, and executive function in Nigerian students?
- Are students who attended ECE programs more likely to complete secondary school and higher education compared to those who did not?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:
Ho: There is no statistical significant impact of early childhood education on student achievement in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:
Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Child Education sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.
Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.
Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is delimited to Education. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.
1.9 Organization of the Study
The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.
Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.
Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.
Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.
Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
