EXPLORING THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION IN PROMOTING AGROECOLOGY PRACTICES IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF KOSSO FARMS)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background to the Study

Agricultural extension services play a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge and promoting sustainable practices within the agricultural sector. In Nigeria, where agriculture serves as a significant contributor to the economy and livelihoods of millions, the role of agricultural extension becomes even more crucial. With the growing recognition of the importance of agroecology in fostering sustainable agriculture, there is a need to explore how agricultural extension services can facilitate the adoption and promotion of agroecological practices across Nigeria. Altieri, M. A., & Nicholls, C. I. (2020).

Agroecology represents a holistic approach to farming that emphasizes the integration of ecological principles into agricultural systems, promoting biodiversity, soil health, and resilience to climate change. By shifting away from conventional, input-intensive methods, agroecology offers promising solutions to the sustainability challenges facing Nigerian agriculture, including soil degradation, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss. Agricultural extension services can serve as a bridge between scientific knowledge and farmers, facilitating the adoption of agroecological practices through education, training, and technical assistance. Ajayi, O. C., & Akinnagbe, O. M. (2019).

However, the effectiveness of agricultural extension in promoting agroecology in Nigeria is influenced by various factors, including institutional support, funding constraints, and the capacity of extension workers. Addressing these challenges is essential to unlocking the full potential of agricultural extension in advancing agroecology across the country. This paper aims to explore the current role of agricultural extension in promoting agroecology practices in Nigeria, identify key challenges and opportunities, and provide recommendations for enhancing extension services to support sustainable agriculture. 1.2      Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, where agriculture remains a critical sector for livelihoods and food security, there is a pressing need to explore the role of agricultural extension services in promoting sustainable agroecology practices. Despite the country's vast agricultural potential, traditional farming methods often contribute to environmental degradation, soil depletion, and reliance on chemical inputs. Agroecology presents a promising alternative, emphasizing the integration of ecological principles into agricultural production systems to enhance resilience, biodiversity, and sustainability. However, the adoption of agroecological practices faces numerous challenges, including limited awareness, insufficient technical support, and ingrained reliance on conventional farming approaches. Thus, investigating the effectiveness of agricultural extension services in disseminating knowledge, providing training, and facilitating the adoption of agroecology practices is crucial for advancing sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria. Altieri, M. A., & Nicholls, C. I. (2020).

This study aims to examine the current role of agricultural extension in promoting agroecology practices across various regions of Nigeria. By conducting surveys, interviews, and field observations, the research will assess the extent to which extension services are equipped to deliver information and support for agroecological techniques. Additionally, the study will explore the perspectives and experiences of farmers regarding the accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness of extension interventions in promoting agroecology. Through a comprehensive analysis of the existing institutional frameworks, policy landscapes, and socio-economic dynamics, this research seeks to identify opportunities and barriers for enhancing the integration of agroecology within agricultural extension programs, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and resilient food systems in Nigeria. 1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine Exploring the Role of Agricultural Extension in Promoting Agroecology Practices in Nigeria. Specific objectives of the study are:

  1. 1.  To assess the current capacity and practices of agricultural extension services in Nigeria to promote agroecology practices.
  2. 2.  To evaluate the effectiveness of agricultural extension interventions in promoting the adoption of agroecology practices by farmers.
  3. To identify strategies for strengthening the role of agricultural extension in promoting agroecology practices in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:

  1. To what extent are extension agents trained and equipped with knowledge and resources on agroecology principles and techniques?
  2. What are the key factors influencing farmers' decisions to adopt or reject agroecology practices promoted by extension services?
  3. What are the key challenges and opportunities faced by extension services in promoting agroecology practices?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:

Ho: There is no statistical significant relationship between Agricultural Extension and Promoting Agroecology Practices in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:

Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Agric Extension sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.

Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.

Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is delimited to Kosso Farms. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.

Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.

Chapter Three centers on the methodologies applied in the study. A more detailed explanation of the research design, population of the study, sample size and technique, data collection method and analysis is discussed in this chapter.

Chapter Four highlights data analysis and interpretation giving the readers a thorough room for the discussion of the practical and theoretical implications of data analyzed in the study.

Chapter Five outlines the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Based on objectives set out, the researcher concludes the paper by answering all research questions set out in the study.
