EVALUATION OF EXTENSION APPROACHES FOR SUSTAINABLE SOIL MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIAN AGRICULTURE (A CASE STUDY OF UYO METROPOLIS)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background to the Study

The agricultural sector in Nigeria plays a pivotal role in the country's economy, providing livelihoods for a significant portion of the population. Sustainable soil management practices are crucial for ensuring long-term agricultural productivity and environmental health. This evaluation aims to explore various extension approaches employed in Nigeria for sustainable soil management in agriculture. Extension approaches serve as vital tools for disseminating knowledge, technologies, and best practices to farmers, facilitating the adoption of sustainable soil management practices. The effectiveness of these approaches in the Nigerian context is of paramount importance for addressing the challenges of soil degradation, erosion, and nutrient depletion. Smith, J. A., & Johnson, R. B. (2018).

Numerous extension methods are employed to promote sustainable soil management in Nigerian agriculture, ranging from traditional farmer field schools to modern digital platforms. This evaluation seeks to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches, considering their adaptability, accessibility, and impact on farmers' behavior and soil health. The findings from this evaluation can inform policymakers, agricultural extension services, and researchers about the most effective strategies for promoting sustainable soil management in the Nigerian agricultural landscape. (FMARD). (2020).

This research draws on a comprehensive review of existing literature on extension approaches for sustainable soil management in Nigeria. Key studies and reports, both national and international, are included to provide a holistic understanding of the current state of soil management practices and extension efforts in the country. By synthesizing information from diverse sources, this evaluation aims to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on sustainable agriculture in Nigeria. The references for this research encompass a range of scholarly articles, government publications, and reputable international organizations, ensuring a robust and well-rounded foundation for the evaluation. 1.2      Statement of the Problem

The sustainable management of soil in Nigerian agriculture is a critical concern due to the increasing threats of soil degradation, erosion, and nutrient depletion. Despite the importance of adopting sustainable soil management practices, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the effectiveness of extension approaches in promoting these practices among farmers. The existing literature reveals a gap in knowledge regarding which extension methods are most successful in influencing farmers' behavior towards sustainable soil management. Moreover, there is limited insight into the specific challenges and constraints faced by agricultural extension services in Nigeria in effectively disseminating information on sustainable soil practices to diverse farming communities. Smith, J. A., & Johnson, R. B. (2018).

The diversity of agricultural landscapes in Nigeria, ranging from the humid rainforest to arid savannas, adds complexity to the issue, as different regions may require tailored extension strategies. Additionally, the rapid advancement of technology and its potential impact on extension approaches further necessitate an in-depth examination of how digital tools, such as mobile applications or online platforms, are being utilized and their effectiveness in reaching a wide range of farmers. This research aims to address these gaps in knowledge by systematically evaluating the existing extension approaches for sustainable soil management in Nigerian agriculture, identifying key challenges, and proposing recommendations to enhance the adoption of sustainable soil practices across diverse farming contexts. (FMARD). (2020).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine Evaluation of Extension Approaches for Sustainable Soil Management in Nigerian Agriculture. Specific objectives of the study are:

  1. 1.  Assess the effectiveness of different extension approaches in promoting sustainable soil management practices among Nigerian farmers.
  2. 2.  Analyze the economic and environmental benefits of adopting sustainable soil management practices in Nigerian agriculture.
  3. Develop recommendations for optimizing extension strategies and farmer incentives to improve the adoption and sustainability of soil management practices in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide the study and achieve the objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated:

  1. What are the different extension approaches currently employed in Nigeria to promote sustainable soil management practices?
  2. What are the long-term economic benefits for farmers adopting sustainable soil management practices (e.g., increased crop yields, reduced input costs)?
  3. What are the key challenges and barriers faced by extension services in promoting sustainable soil management practices?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following research hypothesis was developed and tested for the study:

Ho: There is no statistical significant relationship between Extension Approaches and Sustainable Soil Management in Nigerian Agriculture.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is important for many reasons. The following are the major stakeholders this paper through its practical and theoretical implications and findings will be of great significance:

Firstly, the paper will benefit major stakeholders and policy makers in the Agric Extension sector. The various analysis, findings and discussions outlined in this paper will serve as a guide in enabling major positive changes in the industry and sub-sectors.

Secondly, the paper is also beneficial to the organizations used for the research. Since first hand data was gotten and analysed from the organization, they stand a chance to benefit directly from the findings of the study in respect to their various organizations. These findings will fast track growth and enable productivity in the organisations used as a case study.

Finally, the paper will serve as a guide to other researchers willing to research further into the subject matter. Through the conclusions, limitations and gaps identified in the subject matter, other student and independent researchers can have a well laid foundation to conduct further studies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is delimited to Uyo metropolis. Findings and recommendations from the study reflects the views and opinions of respondents sampled in the area. It may not reflect the entire picture in the population.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The major limitations of the research study are time, financial constraints and delays from respondents. The researcher had difficulties combining lectures with field work. Financial constraints in form of getting adequate funds and sponsors to print questionnaires, hold Focus group discussions and logistics was recorded. Finally, respondents were a bit reluctant in filling questionnaires and submitting them on time. This delayed the project work a bit.

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is made up of five (5) Chapters. Chapter one of the study gives a general introduction to the subject matter, background to the problem as well as a detailed problem statement of the research. This chapter also sets the objectives of the paper in motion detailing out the significance and scope of the paper.

Chapter Two of the paper entails the review of related literature with regards to corporate governance and integrated reporting. This chapter outlines the conceptual reviews, theoretical reviews and empirical reviews of the study.
