THE EFFECT OF POLITICAL LEADERSHIP ON DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF DEMOCRATIC RULE IN LAGOS STATE)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background to the Study

Political leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of development in any nation, and Nigeria stands as a pertinent case study in this regard. The dynamic interplay between political leadership and development outcomes has been a subject of considerable scholarly interest and public debate. This paper aims to explore the multifaceted effects of political leadership on development in Nigeria, examining how the decisions, policies, and actions of political leaders have influenced the country's socio-economic progress over time. Adebayo, A. (2019).

Nigeria, as the most populous country in Africa and a significant player on the global stage, presents a compelling context for studying the nexus between political leadership and development. Since gaining independence from colonial rule in 1960, Nigeria has experienced various phases of political leadership characterized by diverse ideologies, governance styles, and policy approaches. These different leadership paradigms have yielded distinct developmental outcomes, ranging from periods of rapid economic growth and infrastructural development to instances of stagnation, corruption, and socio-political unrest. Agbiboa, D. E. (2017).

The impact of political leadership on development in Nigeria can be assessed through multiple lenses, including economic policies, governance structures, institutional frameworks, and social cohesion initiatives. Effective leadership fosters an environment conducive to sustainable development, characterized by transparent governance, accountable institutions, and inclusive policies that prioritize the needs of the populace. Conversely, poor leadership choices, characterized by corruption, nepotism, and mismanagement, can impede progress, exacerbate inequalities, and hinder the realization of the country's developmental potential. Olowu, D., & Wunsch, J. S. (Eds.). (2015).

Drawing from a diverse range of academic literature, empirical studies, and expert analyses, this paper will delve into the intricate dynamics of political leadership and development in Nigeria. By synthesizing insights from various disciplines such as political science, economics, sociology, and public administration, a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between political leadership and development outcomes in Nigeria will be elucidated. Through this analysis, policymakers, scholars, and stakeholders can glean valuable insights into crafting strategies to foster effective leadership practices that propel Nigeria towards sustainable development and prosperity. 1.2      Statement of the Problem

The effect of political leadership on development in Nigeria is a critical issue that has far-reaching implications for the country's socio-economic progress. Despite being endowed with abundant natural and human resources, Nigeria continues to grapple with significant developmental challenges, including poverty, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and social inequality. One of the key factors influencing these challenges is the quality of political leadership exhibited by successive administrations. The problem lies in the varying degrees of effectiveness, accountability, and transparency demonstrated by political leaders in governing the nation, as well as their propensity for corruption, mismanagement, and lack of long-term vision. Adebayo, A. (2019).

Moreover, the complex interplay between political leadership and development outcomes in Nigeria is exacerbated by institutional weaknesses, partisan politics, ethnic and religious tensions, and a lack of consensus on national development priorities. These factors contribute to a volatile political landscape where short-term political gains often take precedence over sustainable development initiatives. Consequently, the inability of political leaders to effectively address these systemic issues hampers the country's ability to harness its potential for inclusive growth, thereby perpetuating a cycle of underdevelopment and societal discontent. .
