ASSESSMENT OF THE UTILIZATION OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR EFFICIENT JOB PERFORMANCE SMALL SCALE ENTERPRISE

INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The importance of management information system cannot be overemphasized. The duties of Management information system (MIS) is very significant in recent times in business environment because it has advanced over time to come to be a major facet of its business operations. The use of management information system has evolved for last few years not only by firms, but also by individuals and even governments. On account of the today’s global environment where rivalry is very high, it is the elemental obligation of the organization to station management information system to compete the market and also to obtain more productivity, invest in innovation in their products, and to advance their businesses. All of these elements metamorphosed the information system from data processing systems to decision support systems and became the bedrock of the current business environment.

Today, business managers are much more bothered about the effect of rivalry than they were over the years. They must react to the competitive ultimatums not just from local beginning but also from territorial, national and international source; furthermore, they must seek to tour every chance that are present in the immediate, national and Global environment. liberalism has also grown rivalry threaths for organizations to be sustained, grow and prosper. In such a competitive environment, managers must engage numerous resources available as efficiently as possible in other to achieve the aims and goals of the enterprise. Management Information System makes information available in the form of reports and displays to managers and numerous business professionals. For instance, sales managers may use their networked computer and web browser to get immediate show about the sales outcomes of their day to day sales analysis report to examine sales made by every sales personnel. Management Information System also takes into consideration combined or unified nature of information flow as well as the arrangement of the organization around decision centers. Qualities of performance are part of any good plans; therefore, determination of qualities like other segments of the planning process relies on the handiness of important management information system.

Management information system supports the working and observation of an organization. It further explains the constituents and resources to make sure the well-functioning of an organization. Management information system has metamorphosed the physical blueprint of offices to contain local networks and departmental unified systems. It is also a formalized process to provide management at all levels and in all functions with exact, needed information from all appropriate source to permit them make prompt and productive decisions for planning, directing, appraising, and controlling the activities for which they are accountable. A vital mission also facing management in almost every field of Endeavour is to plan attentively so that the quantity and quality of information gotten will be perfect to meet its needs. One possible high-powered resource at managers’ disposal is Information Technology (IT), though it could also serve as a threat, but the Top management has to be creative and calculated enough through their conceptual and cognitive capacity to tour full opportunities in all calculated decisions of the business which affect the long term goal of the Organization. More records has shown how Information Technology has profitably and single handedly given some companies an edge over their rivalries both in the National and Global Markets. A Management Information System (MIS) is a subdivision of all the internal control of a business comprising the application of people, documents, technologies, and processes by management accountants to solve business issues like costing a product, service or a calculated business-wide. Management Information Systems are different from the normal information systems being that they are utilized in analyzing other information systems applied in operational activities in the organization.

Despite the fact that management information system provides decision makers with information, hence, it supports and inflates the overall decision making process. MIS also intensifies job performance throughout an institution. Effective MIS should make sure the accurate presentation, layouts and time frames needed by operations and senior management are met. MIS can be preserves, assesses and established by either manual or automated systems or a Combination of both. It should always be enough to meet an enterprise's specific business goals and objectives. Hence, it seeks to assess the utilization of management information system for efficient job performance small scale enterprise.

1.2 Problem of the study

Based on Barry’s definition, information is a generic term, because it has been defined as the powerhouse of any business (public, private, local firm, Multinational company, manufacturing, merchandise, and franchise business, retailing stores, multiple chain stores or service oriented organization). It lays out the applicable concept and intelligence to help the right thing to be done at the right time. The problems to be studied are as follows:

Is there any need for management information system in Nigeria SMEs?

Does the status of a business determine the type of information system in it?

Does MIS aid decision-making in a SME?

Could there be any room for development or improvement of MIS in Nigeria?

1.3 Objective of study

Objective of this study is to assess the utilization of management information system for efficient job performance small scale enterprise. Following objectives include;

  1. 1.  To assess how management information system give positive impact on the performance of the organization and how it can increase the profitability, innovation, and growth of the organization.
  2. 2.  To ascertain if MIS policies or practices, processes, objectives and internal control are adequate.
  3. 3.  To evaluate whether MIS application provides users with timely, accurate, consistent, complete and relevant information.
  4. 4.  To examine whether MIS application and enhancement system exist to adequately supports corporate goals.
  5. 5.  To identify the determine factors influencing MIS process in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Question

Our main research question is

Following objectives include;

1.5 research hypotheses

HO1: Management information system gives positive impact on the performance of the organization and how it can increase the profitability, innovation, and growth of the organization.

HO2: MIS application does not provides users with timely, accurate, consistent, complete and relevant information.

1.6 Significance of the study

The findings of this study will be of immense benefit to:

        Small and medium scale businesses, since it will help identify most of the challenges faced by businesses. Solutions will then be proffered on theses identified challenges. This will go a long way to help the bank achieve its corporate objectives.

        This study will also be of benefits to the community and the society by creating awareness on the different businesses.

1.7   Scope of the Study

        The study was limited to management information system, a major concentration of kosso farms. We shall have samples from kosso farms staff. The simple random sampling system will be used to evaluate the samples. Methods of data collection shall include interviews, questionnaire administration, and the direct observation of assessment of the utilization of management information system for efficient job performance small scale enterprise (a case study of kosso farms).

1.8   Limitations of the Study

        Just two constraints can be said to be a major limitation to this study. They include:
