RURAL WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN NIGERIA. (A CASE STUDY OF ODUKPANI LGA CROSS RIVER STATE).

CHAPTER 1----INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The concept of Entrepreneurship education is centered on the training and acquisition of skills and knowledge which leads to the identification of new business opportunity. Entrepreneurship education leads to the realization of new business opportunities.  The primary type of entrepreneurship is the starting of a new business. Entrepreneurship focuses on creativity and innovation, which is considered as a requirement for new venture development.  Enterprise is the conversion of new ideas and opportunities into a business venture and entrepreneurship is defined as the development of skills for the starting and running of a new business. Rural development is essentially associated with entrepreneurship. Therefore entrepreneurship is used as a strategic development intervention for the development of the rural areas. Entrepreneurship provides Women with an employment possibility near their homes which provides autonomy, independence and a reduced need for social support. Entrepreneurship improves the quality of lives in the rural communities and sustains a healthy economy and environment. Rural entrepreneurship enhances the development of   entrepreneurial talent among women and subsequent growth of rural businesses. Women entrepreneurship is necessary for sustainable rural development because, Women entrepreneurship involves women empowerment which according to Azikiwe in (Olawamimo, 2011) means “raising the awareness and consciousness of women towards participating in entrepreneurial ventures.The study seeks to appraise rural women entrepreneurship in Nigeria. A case study of Odukpani local government local government of cross river state.

 

 

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The role of women in rural development is essential since women make up more than 50 percent of Nigerian population in the rural areas. The concept of the application of entrepreneurial development as a strategy for rural development   is faced with some challenges including the segregation of women to access to financial grants. In rural areas, the gender issue is usually a much stronger hindering factor to potential female entrepreneurs than it is in urban areas. Also  women in the rural areas hold low self-esteem and managerial skills when compared to urban women . Therefore, special programmes of assistance in form of technical and financial aid is required  to overcome these constraints and  meet the needs of rural women in order to be able to take an active part in entrepreneurial venture in their communities,  expand  already existing business, or to function as social entrepreneurs for the development of the rural areas and the expansion of women participation  in entrepreneurial ventures.The  problem confronting the study is to appraise rural women entrepreneurship in Nigeria. A case study of Odukpani local government local government of cross river state.

 

1.3   OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The fundamental objective of the study is to appraise rural women entrepreneurship in Nigeria. A case study of Odukpani local government of cross river state. The specific objectives of the study include;

1      To determine the relevance of rural women entrepreneurship.

       2   To determine the impact of rural women entrepreneurship in Odukpani local government local government of cross river state.
