THE AWARENESS, ASSESSIBILITY AND USABILITY OF INTERNET TECHNOLOGY IN PROMOTING EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BASIC SCIENCE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In recent times computers play significant role in the development and application of scientific knowledge, and facilitate the learning of science. Consequently the National Science Teachers Association advocates that computers should be applied and made functional in the teaching and learning of science. Computers have  made students concentrate actively in research and learning and therefore become an essential classroom instrument for the acquisition, analysis, presentation, and communication of data. The use of computers also enables the teacher to be flexible in the presentation and management of instructional techniques, and easier record keeping. It provides the students the fundamental resource for learning the concepts and processes of science through simulations, graphics, sound, data manipulation, and model building. The use of portable laptop computer allows students to carefully gather and analyze for classroom in-depth study and the dissemination of information. These computer capabilities facilitate the effective learning of science and facilitate the communication of ideas and concepts. Computers also enhance laboratory activities. The study seeks to appraise the awareness, accessibility and usability of internet technology in promoting effective teaching and learning of basic science.

1.2 STATEMENT   OF   THE PROBLEM

The use of Internet is faced with some basic challenges which include lack of basic infrastructural requirements such  a steady supply of electricity, unavailability of Internet facility for use by the people, inadequate access points, connectivity problems as well as high cost of computer  (Lishan, 2004). These challenges militate against the use Internet and bring extra costs to end-users. The problem confronting the study is to appraise the awareness, accessibility and usability of internet technology in promoting effective teaching and learning of basic science.

1.3 OBJECTIVE   OF THE STUDY

It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies         to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

 1.8 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

INTERNET DEFINED

The Internet is defined as the global system of interconnected computer networks which utilizes Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing.
