STATISTICAL ANALYSIS ON THE PREVALENCE OF PROSTRATE CANCER IN NIGERIA.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Prostate cancer is  characterized by growth of cells in the prostate gland which are uncontrolled   The prostate constitute  the walnut-sized gland in men, situated  below the bladder and in front of the rectum, around  the urethra - the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. The prostate is responsible for producing and storing the fluid which is used for the making of semen, and is involved in regulating bladder control. Prostate cancer is a malevolent tumor of the prostate, the gland that produces some of the components of semen. Schroder FH, Hugosson J, Roobol MJ, et al (2012). Prostate cancer is responsible for the high death tool among males in the US. It is detected earlier as a hard nodule found during a routine rectal examination.  PSA blood test is used for the screening of prostate cancer. The process of Diagnosing prostate cancer is determined when upon examination the cancer cells are identified in the prostate tissue obtained via biopsy. Prostate cancer constitute a prominent cause of death among men in Nigeria. It is estimated that an hospital prevalence of 127 per 100,000 have prostrate cancer in Lagos, Nigeria in 1997. A recent data from southwest Nigeria also indicated an hospital prevalence of 182.5 per 100,000 male as having prostate cancer. The study seeks to proffer a statistical analysis on the prevalence of prostate cancer in Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT   OF   THE PROBLEM

The level of infected patients with prostate cancer is high in Nigeria is very high and it is responsible for high death tool among men in Africa according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that In Nigeria, about 10,000 deaths are caused by prostrate cancer while only 17 percent of African countries have well-funded cancer control programmes. At the global level it is also noted that only few countries have functional plans to prevent the disease and proffer solution. This lack of functional program is alarming in developing countries according to world health organization. The situation account for more than two-thirds of the new cancer cases and deaths each year. The problem confronting the study is to proffer a statistical analysis on the prevalence of prostate cancer in Nigeria.
