BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Physical fitness is described as a state of health and well-being and the ability to perform aspects of sports, occupations and daily activities. Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical exercise, and sufficient rest. Tremblay MS, Colley RC, Saunders TJ, Healy GN, Owen N (December 2010). In the early times fitness was defined as the ability to effectively conducts the day’s activities without undergoing any fatigue. However, with the development in automation and changes in living standard, physical fitness is currently viewed as the extent to which the ones ability can function efficiently and effectively in the conduct of work and leisure activities remain healthy, resist hypokinetic diseases, and respond to emergency situations.

According to Malina R (2010) Fitness is the quality or condition of being fit. The current definition of fitness describes it as a person  capacity to execute a specific function or the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Also fitness is attributed to the possession of a substantial aerobic or anaerobic ability, which refers to endurance or strength. The implementation of a comprehensive fitness program leads to an improvement of a person’s physical fitness as against practicing only an aspect of it such as only cardio/respiratory endurance or only weight training. The study seeks to appraise the analysis of the level of physical fitness among students in public secondary schools in delta state.
