IMPACT OF SCHOOL MAPPING EXERCISE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The essential planning tool required to overcome possible inequality in the investment policies of public authorities is school mapping. Its aim is to address the deficiency in educational system. School mapping constitute the strategic location of educational facilities to enhance easy access and effective usage by people of particular community. According to Yusuf and Akinniranye (2011), school mapping involves assessing and identifying school requirement and recognizing the best communities for the siting of new schools and the provision of additional educational resources. Caillods (1993) views school mapping as a set of techniques and procedures deployed for identifying the future needs in education and to adopt measures to provide them at the local level.  Also Akpakwu (2012), stated that school mapping constitute a set of techniques and procedures deployed for the identification of future educational needs which are to be located in a particular community or geographical area. The situation facing many communities is the lack of access to schools due to the fact that many schools are opened in many parts based on political considerations rather than local needs. This results to uneven location of educational institutions, which leads to the lack of access, overutilization or underutilization of educational facilities. Consequently while one area is allocated with  more schools, some areas are without any or very few. The provision of educational facilities constitutes the fundamental resources needed to maintain an effective standard of educational system. These include buildings, equipment, materials, and so forth. They are those things that are needed by a teacher to make his production efforts. The study seeks to appraise the impact of school mapping exercise on the academic performance of secondary school students.

1.2 STATEMENT   OF   THE PROBLEM

The inadequacy of school facilities constitutes a major problem to both teachers and student alike. It also affects the objective of the provision of education for all. Therefore when school facilities are not evenly located it leads to inaccessibility, underutilization and overutilization of school facilities in some cases and since the  quality of education depends on the availability of educational facilities , it therefore affect the academic performance of the students. The problem facing the study is to appraise the impact of school mapping exercise on the academic performance of secondary school students.

1.3 OBJECTIVE   OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the impact of school mapping exercise on the academic performance of secondary school students; The specific objectives include

1 To determine the relevance of school mapping exercise.
