INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The human life sometimes requires rest and less attention to work and stress. These are moments and times of great importance and sensitivity where one gathers strength and takes off work stress. These moments can be an opportunity for individual personality development. Extracurricular activities are the opportunities which exist for responsible person to exercise out of work activities and everything is in his power to deal with his own desire and willingness. This is the free time available for people and requires an effective use of it. For secondary school people this is the time devoted for sporting rehearsal, rest, singing, drama, debating club activities etc. The essence is to reinvigorate or bring live to a boring and stressful condition. Extracurricular activities constitute plays a vital role in today’s human societies. It is essential that the free time we have is effectively used to advance our lives. It constitutes a thinking time for scholars and it is time to innovate, and for the youth it is the time for creativity. Therefore it is a vital component for the development of the child. Schools and educational institutions are expected to assume more responsibility to making extracurricular activities more rewarding and fulfilling so that the optimal use of leisure time is designed and incorporated in student’s programs (Lafransur, 2001:55).The development and enrichment of supplementary and extra-curricular activities is necessary to bridge the gap created in the nature of the current educational curriculum which adopts a relatively focused approach to curriculum planning and the lack of attention to the development of learners' social, emotional and cognitive skills. Therefore extracurricular activities address the inadequacies and shortcomings of the curriculum, develop the interests and talents of the students and responds to the individual needs and leisure time of the people. It contribute to the fast pace of transformations of today’s world and deepen the learning process. The study is an assessment of effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary school. A case study of FGC Ikom.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The objective of education is to enhance the development of the human attitude to life and promote the philosophy of progress while building the skill of the people in the society to enhance a healthy living and constructive future. Consequently an essential part of advanced and modern education is the special attention to activities that students do outside the classroom and school. These are the extracurricular activities which also contribute to the wellbeing and growth of the students. Therefore, it is essential that the educational system provide the enabling environment to promote extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities enhances student’s self-motivation makes the school more attractive and increases its utility and also promotes the student interested in a subject while reducing mental boredom (Slavin, 2008:38). The problem confronting the study is an assessment of effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary school. A case study of FGC Ikom.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The Main Objective of the study is an assessment of effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary school. A case study of FGC Ikom; The specific objectives include

2 To determine the effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary school.
3 To proffer an assessment of the effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary in FGC Ikom.

1.5 STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS
The statement of the hypothesis for the study is stated in Null as follows
HO The level of motivation among secondary school teachers in obio akpor local government area is low.
Ho The attitude among secondary school teachers in obio akpor local government area is negative.
Ho The relationship between motivational needs and attitude among secondary school teachers in obio akpor local government area is negative.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is an assessment of the effectiveness of extracurricular activities of junior secondary in FGC Ikom. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.
