ATTITUDES OF YOUTH TOWARDS VIEWERSHIP OF NTA PROGRAMS IN NIGERIA; A STUDY OF YOUTHS IN GBOKO METROPOLIS.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Television constitute a significant medium of communication in the 21st century for disseminating information, education, entertainment, and persuasion. Television has the advantage of providing vision for mass communication. The Programmes transmitted serve as the means of attracting audience and determining the viability of the station. According to Ogbuoshi, (2005), television consists of an electronic device which transmit images and sound. Television exacts influences on the social and psychological development of the youth. The television helps to serve the publics’ interest and increase the understanding of the world around us. In Nigeria, television started operation in Ibadan in 1959, as western Nigerian television but later converted to Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Ibadan. Television affects people differently, depending on the information type and exposure level (Bandura, 1973 & Van, 1990). The government provides measures which regulate and prevent transmission of certain programmes. They ban information and techniques that may be dangerous to the viewing population. Consequently, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission has in recent times sanctioned some stations over breach of professional conduct (Aliyu, 2010). The study seeks to appraise the attitude of youth towards viewship of NTA programs in Nigeria. A case study of youths in Gboko metropolis, Benue State.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The use of television for promoting learning and entertainment has taken center place in contemporary society. This is facilitated by the nature of the progrmmes transmitted by the Nigerian television authority. Consequently, the problem confronting the study is to appraise the attitude of youth towards viewship of NTA programs in Nigeria. A Case study of youths in Gboko metropolis, Benue State.

     1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the research is to proffer an appraisal on the attitude of youth towards viewship of NTA programs in Nigeria. A case study of youths in gboko metropolis. The specific objectives include:

    i.        To investigate the relevance of youth viewership of NTA programs.

   ii.        To determine the attitude of youths towards viewership of NTA programs in Nigeria.

 iii.        To examine how often gboko youths watch NTA programs.

 iv.        To suggest ways NTA can have youths’ viewership of their programs.          

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

    i.        How relevant is youth viewership of NTA programs?

   ii.        What are the attitudes of youths towards viewership of NTA programs in Nigeria?

 iii.        How often do gboko youths watch NTA programs?

 iv.        What are the ways NTA can have youths’ viewership of their programs?  

1.5 STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

The statement of the hypothesis for the study is stated in Null as follows:

Ho:   The attitude of youths in gboko metropolis towards viewship of NTA programs in Nigeria is negative.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research proffers an appraisal on the attitude of youth towards viewship of NTA programs in Nigeria. A case study of youths in gboko metropolis. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

NTA DEFINED                                                

NTA refers to the Nigerian Television Authority which is a Nigerian government-owned commercial television station inaugurated in 1977.  

AUDIENCE DEFINED

The Audience consists of the group of people who participate in a lecture, training sessions, and show or encounter a work of art, literature etc.

PERCEPTION DEFINED

Perception is the arrangement, recognition, and interpretation of sensory information so as  to represent and understand the presented information, or the environment.
