ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ADULT EDUCATION IN NASSARAWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Adult education involves the provision of systematic and sustained self-educating activities to the adults so enable them gain new forms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values (Merriam, Sharan B. & Brockett, Ralph, 2007). It is any form of learning provided for the adults beyond traditional schooling, encompassing basic literacy to personal fulfillment as a lifelong learner. Community participation in the provision of adult education enhances the identification of community-specific education issues which facilitates the development of strategies to enhance the access to quality education within a given community. It also constitutes a channel for mobilizing resources to improve the state of public education in the community. Community involvement in education is essential for many reasons. It identifies local education issues and develops strategies to resolve them. It ensures that quality is not compromised   helps to ensure the implementation of the curriculum in the delivery education services in the community. Community participation also constitutes an effective mechanism in monitoring the process and outcomes of education at the community level. The study seeks to proffer an assessment of community participation in the management of adult education in Nassarawa local government.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Community participation in adult education is faced with some challenges at the community level which impedes on its effective implementation. These challenges include lack of parent involvement in education. Poor attendance to meetings, parent illiteracy and poverty. Other issues include Cultural issues where class and gender.  Impedes community participation and some individuals and groups find it difficult to have their voice heard and well as political influence. In some cases, there were allegation of misappropriation of funds and work impeded due to widespread corruption. Consequently, the problem confronting the study is to proffer an assessment of community participation in the management of adult education in Nassarawa local government.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The Main Objective of the study is to proffer an assessment of community participation in the management of adult education in Nassarawa local government. The specific objectives include:

  1. To examine the significant relationship between adult education and community development in Nassarawa local government area.
  2. To identify ways communities can help resuscitate adult education in Nassarawa LGA.
  3. To investigate the problems of adult education in Nasarawa LGA.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

    i.        What is the relationship between adult education and community development in Nassarawa LGA?

   ii.        What are the ways communities can help resuscitate adult education in Nassarawa LGA?

 iii.        What are the problems of adult education program in Nassarawa LGA?

1.5 STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

Ho1: There are no problems of adult education in communities Nassarawa LGA.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study proffers an assessment of community participation in the management of adult education in nassarawa local government. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies         to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

 1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.

ADULT EDUCATION DEFINED

TEACHING DEFINED

Teaching constitute the process of attending to people’s needs, experiences and feelings, and intervening so that they learn particular things, and go beyond the given.

EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISION DEFINED

Educational Supervision consist of all effort involving school officials directed at t providing leadership to educational workers or teachers to enhance an  improved educational system and institution. The process involves the deployment of human and material resources.

EDUCATION DEFINED

 Education is viewed as the process of inviting truth and possibility. It is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.
