SAFETY PROCEDURES AND PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

INTRODUCTION

1.1          BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The performance of primary school children has been greatly influenced by the school environment. The need to provide safe and conducive school environment has been of great concern to parents, school authorities and the government in view of ugly incidences in many schools in recent times. A safety procedure is a step by step process of a work procedure to safeguard from deviations which could lead to injury or accident. The safety procedure document provides a guide for conducting the activities of the organization. It lists out all associated hazards and guidelines to ensure safety. Safety is the condition of freedom from hazards and protection from harm. A Safe Work Procedure describes the safest and most efficient way to carry out the organizational functions. The safety of the school environment motivates the children to learn and to be enthusiastic about being in school. Consequently, when their safety is not guaranteed the feeling of comfort is eroded and the children are withdrawn to fear and performance affected. The study seeks to appraise safety procedures and performance of primary children.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The issue of school safety has constituted a major concern for all stakeholders involving parents, school authorities and all levels of government. There have been numerous cases of violence, accidents and attacks on primary school children which has led to sicknesses, loss of properties, disabilities and sudden deaths. The constant witnessing of these incidents by kids instills fear in them and leads to psychological distress. There is the need for a safe learning environment for primary school children so as to enhance effective learning and development of skills required for quality education and the future. The Main Objective of the study is to investigate safety procedures and performance of primary school children. The specific objectives include:

    i.        To determine the relevance of safety procedures.

   ii.        To determine the level of performance of primary school children.

 iii.        To determine the relationship between safety procedures and performance of primary school children.

The statement of the hypotheses for the study is stated in Null as follows:

Ho1: The level of performance of primary school children is not significant.

Ho2:    There is no relationship between safety procedures and performance of primary school children.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study investigates safety procedures and performance of primary school children. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies which will further stimulate the economy to economic growth and development.
