1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is essentially the obligation of the broadcast media to inform the electorate of political developments. But when this function is politicized and directed to favor certain individuals or groups then the generality of the masses are led to uncertainty. The national Broadcasting commission mandates that political coverage should be carried out in line with extant laws. The national Broadcasting commission mandates that political coverage should be carried out in line with extant laws. According to Section 7. 8. 2 of the code, political coverage should be conducted under the principle of fairness and balance. It also prevents the monetization of political broadcast. Section 4. 4.7. Stipulate the need for objectivity and fairness in the production and reporting of political news and programs. But this is the area where the broadcast media has failed. The present dispensation shows the exertion of influence by wealthy politician on the broadcast media to report news to their favour. Most appalling is the neglect of the grassroot in the dissemination of information. Akin Mabogunje (1991), stated that 95% of Nigerians in the rural areas are illiterates and 70% of Nigerians live in the rural areas .This indicate that a large segment of the population lie in the rural area and are neglected in the political process due to information misrepresentation. Consequently the attainment of political development is a mirage if institutions such as the family units, the cultural institutions and Traditional political institutions are neglected in our local communities. In the light of the existing challenges confronting the mass media a review of the extant laws is recommended to reflect the realities of the modern day politics. Therefore the problem confronting the study is to appraise the impact of radio broadcast on Nigeria political development.
