HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND PROSTITUTION IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

          This project tends to indicate and study the statistical analysis of human trafficking in Nigeria and also their relationship over years.

          Ojomo J.A (2002) observed that human trafficking is an act of illegal transaction business form. It can also be referred to as the movement of women and children for the purpose of sexual exploitation, agricultural slavery, false labour, organ harvesting and ritual.

          Trafficking and prostitution which have been honorably embraced by youth and married women in overcoming the fear of poverty. It is common everywhere in Nigeria even in area up North where there have concerted efforts to stop it, but female international trafficking are known to be peculiar to Edo and delta State. The huge numbers of girls deported claiming to have come from these particular areas of the country.

          Hence, one may say it is not a national problem but the wives of Governors will be quick to state categorically that the state of origin approach is misleading. Outside there is Europe, it is the image of Nigeria not Edo, Delta or any other state that is at stake.

          The business of trafficking human being particularly women and children today is organized by groups that is also involved in weapon and narcotics, colluding with Government officials in many countries of the world, there is no doubt that the business is lucrative and may be one of the most difficult to combat.

          Human trafficking includes women and children prostitution (sex workers), domestic servitude, illegal and bonded labour service, marriage, false adoption, sex tourism and entertainment, pornography, organized begging, organ harvesting and other criminal activities.

          Nigeria is not the only country perpetuating this act (human trafficking) nor is it the only country suffering from its effect. It is estimated that one to two million people are being trafficked around the world every year mostly women and children, it should be noted that men and young boys are also victims of this problem of trafficking who are forced to prostitute too, agricultural bondage and other forms of indentured servitude.

          Statistics indicate that approximately 50,000 (fifty thousand) women and children are trafficked from Africa into the United States of America, Japan, Australia, Western Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, Soviet Union and Latin America in the year 2003.

          Nigerian Government and Non-Governmental agencies, various groups and individual have been deeply concerned about the problem of trafficking of women and girls for prostitution. Information has made it clear of the high level of dehumanization, debasement of womanhood and the stigma, particularly in relation to Nigeria that is generated by social problem.

          It I necessary and important to note that trafficking of women and girl for prostitution is a social problem and no more a legal one. To this end there is need to give attention to this problem and a way to providing solution to it.

1.1     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

          This is more important because it proves that the great mass of trafficking and prostitution of women and girls inthis country are course of time assorted into the so called respectable classes. This work tends to examine whether the rate of women trafficking and prostitution is on the increase or decrease side and if it will continue to increase in the nearest future. It also help to show the effect and problem of women trafficking in Nigeria, it helps in addressing the appropriate measures for tackling the problem of women trafficking in Nigeria And in this light, the object of this study are;

  1. To eliminate the criminal exploitation of children and women trafficking and prostitution of Edo state Nigeria.
  2. To identify the method of recruitment of trafficking and prostitution, and to make recommendation for eradication of trafficking activities in Edo State, Nigeria.
  3. To ensure the negative impact of trafficking, prostitution to social, moral and economy of Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

          Government and Non-Governmental organization colluding to educate this people, organizing awareness program and spelling our sanction against those committing such crime or act but still numbers of women trafficking and prostitution in Nigeria is on the increase side.

v Is this because of poor level of education?

v Is this because of inadequate educational opportunity?

v Is this because of low status at women?

v Is this because of organized awareness program?

v Is this because of abject poverty?

1.3     HYPOTHESIS OF THE RESEARCH

          To know whether the rate of women and child trafficking in Nigeria is on the increase or decrease side.

Ho: There is no significant difference between trafficking and sex workers in Edo state.

H1: There is significant difference between trafficking and sex workers in Edo state.

 

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

          The reoccurring problem “Trafficking “ in Nigeria as a nation has remained a complex problem because of the nature of mortally, the abuse of human right, child abuse, possibility of sexual transmitted disease such as gonorrhoea0 and acquire immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The study will be of great importance to Nigerian families of such adverse, the effect of trafficking their young women and girls for prostitution for the sake of making money, and will be able to further join hand to fight it.

          It will help researchers who have the interest to carry out more research on women trafficking and prostitution. This study will help to expose the hindering stimulation effect of women trafficking in Nigeria. It will also assist readers who have the intension and courage to reading about women trafficking in Nigeria so as to be able to proffer solution and resolution in the nearest future.

          In Nigeria, there is need for everybody, the young and old to know the truth, implication and about the danger in trafficking and prostitution. The most basic fundamental facts about it are known to us. We must share this knowledge to save people and not only share it with younger ones but with the elderly ones too. Older people are often the perpetuators of trafficking and prostitution.

 

 

1.5     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

          In the course study and research of this project work on women and child trafficking in Edo State, there were some limitation to the effective comparative analysis of this work, some of the problems are;

  1. Differed appointment and change in time schedule of appointment.
  2. The date for the year at study 2008-2013 were a bit available, therefore limiting the research work to only five (5) years ie 2008-2013.
  3. The unavailability if the data has prevented the researcher from working on the case in that the available data were not grouped into states.

1.6     DEFINITION OF TERMS

ü Trafficking: This means the movement of people or goods from one place to another. It is also defined as an act of illegal transaction of business in whatever form.

ü Prostitution: The exchange of sexual relationship for money or monetary form. It is also the work of a sex worker (prostitute).

ü Sex worker: According to Odimman 2003, in the book titled “harvest of shame” sees sex workers as women of loose character and easy virtues which have no value for their lives and would do anything in exchange for money.

ü Primary class prostitution: This refers to women or girls who engage in the behaviour (prostitution) whenever they are in need to get quick money or monetary favour such as employment etc. this class may not possess the relevant skills in prostitution.

ü Secondary class prostitution: This refers to women or girls who are professionally in the job of prostitution. They offer sexual relationship in exchange for money. This possesses relevant skills in prostitution and can offer sex to anyone irrespective of their physical feature or social status.

ü External trafficking: This is the recruitment and form of transportation of human beings from one country to another.

ü Internal trafficking: This is the recruitment and transportation of human being from one city to another (within the same country).

ü Traffickers: A trafficker is someone who buys and sells illegal goods, especially drugs.
