QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF BOREHOLE, TAP WATERS IN ABEOKUTA

ABSTRACT

The quality assessment of borehole, tap waters and well waters from fifteen locations in Abeokuta area were studied and compared with Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) standards. The parameters analyzed include pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, temperature, faecal coliform, total coliform, zinc, copper, lead, chromium, cadmium, arsenic, iron and nickel. The results obtained showed high pH value in one location, low pH value in two locations, high electrical conductivity value in six locations, high total dissolved solids in five locations, high cadmium value in fourteen locations, high arsenic values in eight locations, high iron value in three location and high nickel value in nine locations with respect to the SON permissible limits for portable water. All the waters show presence of coliform bacteria.

Consequently, these ground waters in this study require treatment before they will be good for human consumption.
